The Detroit Police Department is looking for a few hundred good men -- and women -- while sending a message that suburban adrenaline junkies need not apply. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings made that clear Tuesday when they launched what they called the department's biggest recruitment campaign in more than 20 years. Speaking at police headquarters, they emphasized that preference would be given to applicants from Detroit and, in a change of tactics, said the department would promote the public service aspect of police work...

Good plan guys, keep up the good work. Maybe in a couple of years we will be under 500k for a population. Great job.

this residency thing sickens me.... There is no basis of proof that just because someone lives in the city they care more about the city...

Personally, I think it is more a personal thing.. If you care, you care, if you don't, you don't it doesn't matter whether you live in or out of the city, or the country for that matter.... We need good people... period. It doesn't matter where the hell they live.

Amen to that brother. For the record I live neither in Detroit or in the US and I have worked in Detroit in security, police and EMS (not for the city but in the city) and I cared more about my job than more than half the people that lived in Detroit or in the US for that matter. I always am very concerned about the people I serve and realize they need me and that it's not just a job.
